New York Medicaid – Phase II Implementation – IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR PRACTICES WITH MULTIPLE PROVIDERS
The New York Medicaid Phase II Implementation transition period ends June 20, 2005. The payer's new specifications require any practices that currently have multiple providers submitting with one user ID to resubmit their paperwork and get a NEW user ID and password. These practices can continue submitting claims for the multiple providers in one batch. Practices that currently have one ID and password DO NOT have to resubmit their paperwork; the system will automatically convert these users to the new system. In order to meet the June deadline, any practices using a single ID and password for multiple providers must complete an application to ensure electronic access for each individual provider.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
* The application must be sent via U.S. Postal Service to the mailing address specified on the form.
* Applications faxed to the NY Medicaid office will not be accepted.

National Provider Identifier (NPI) Activities Begin May 23, 2005
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced the availability of the National Provider Identifier (NPI). NPI is a single provider identifier that replaces various provider identifiers physicians currently used for each health plan with which they do business. CMS sent announcement letters to all providers announcing that they may apply for their NPI number beginning May 23, 2005. The letter also provides background information about the NPI and three ways to obtain an NPI. It also describes how to use their NPI and includes contacts and resources for more NPI information or answer questions. The letter is accessible on the CMS website at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/npi_provider.asp.

NDCHealth has prepared NPI provider number implementation by providing a field in NDCMedisoft (V9 and higher) for providers to store their NPI number. NDCHealth will continue to monitor new CMS announcements and individual payer announcements. We will make any necessary changes to our currently released electronic claims processing applications to ensure physician compliance with the NPI requirements.
